ANZAC LETTERS

Each school in New Zealand set up a field of remembrance to honour and remember those from New Zealand who served and fell in WW1.
As a class we went to our field of remembrance and chose 5 names of those fallen, so that we could wear our poppies to remember them on ANZAC day.

B.E. Mercer
W.J. Shaw
H.J. Nicholas
Nurse C.A. Fox
and D.F. Brown

We also wrote letters to these brave people who sacrificed so much for us.

We took our letters to the field of remembrance, sang the national anthem, sat in silence to remember and read our letters.

WACKY WOVEN WEBS

Wacky Woven Webs

Spiders are so versatile that they can live and survive in many different habitats, including our living classroom! To pay tribute to our tiny hairy friends A1 worked diligently cutting and tying plastic shopping bags together to make plarn (plastic yarn).
A1’s clever students then carefully wove the beautiful plarn spider webs you see below. It really was TRASH to TREASURE!

Our webs have been installed in the living classroom across from the stream. We couldn't be more proud.

SPIDER FACES

So proud of our work!

A1 spiders in the webs!!

Dear Whanau: If you did not get a chance to go down to the living classroom please feel free to ask Miss Healey to book in a time and she will unlock the gate and take you down with your child after school, the trail of sculptures our school has created are really worth seeing!!

The weaving process

Aliza getting close to finishing this web.
 1. Collect plastic bags
2. Fold and cut plastic bags
3. Tie cut pieces into plarn
4. WEAVE!!

Arran was very proud of his weaving.

Dante the weaving master.

Joel putting the finishing touches on our last web.

Ziyon happily working on our wacky woven web.
We trialled wrapping the plarn around a spoon instead of making plarn balls. Some students really liked this way and others preferred the plarn ball.
Aj getting one of the webs started
Ariyan weaving away

Daiyaan concentrating on the task

Haleina really enjoyed the weaving.
Weaving buddies Kaea and Viliami

Uzhair wove in the       class library.
Dexton and Ziyon working with their team

The great thing about our project was that every part of the process could be done individually, in pairs, or in groups.

Moses worked hard from start to finish.

Puhi starting a new web.
Tying the cut plastic bags together was an art form of its own.  Each and every student in A1 tied sooo many plastic bag pieces together! We couldn't count how many times we filled the blue tub in this video and emptied it.  We made so many balls of yarn and used every one of them in our sculpture.

Watch the video below as cece explains the tying process.
